Flagger | Idaho State Certification
Idaho Flagger certification course. Per ITD requirements, this class is offered in-person only.
Description
This 6-hour certification class prepares students with the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance the safety of both workers and drivers in a work zone. Students who successfully pass the open-book knowledge exam with a score of 80% or better will receive an Idaho State Flagger certification that is valid for 3 years and can be used in Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and Montana.

- The clothing and equipment that you’ll need to have on the job
- What goes into setting up a Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) zone, including warning devices, spacing, and where a flagger fits in
- Flagger placement and how to signal using a STOP/SLOW paddle, flashlight, or red flag
- How to keep yourself and others safe in the work zone
- Special situations such as flagging at intersections, roundabouts, and railroad crossings
Requirements
- Age: Flaggers must be at least 18 years old. You may be permitted to complete the Idaho Flagger certification course prior to turning 18, but you will not receive your certification, nor will you be eligible to work as a Flagger, until after you have turned 18.

Please note that your employer's policy may have fewer, additional, or differing requirements than those listed. Check with your employer to ensure you are familiar with the physical demands and requirements that pertain to you.
Documentation
You must bring photo identification to class. State- or government-issued identification (such as a state ID card, driver license, or passport) is preferred.
Schedule
Students should arrive at least 15 minutes before class to get checked in. A 30-minute lunch and short morning/afternoon breaks will be provided. During the final portion of the class, students will complete the Idaho Flagger certification exam.
Student materials
Student materials will be provided to you during class and are yours to keep.
Certification
An Idaho Flagger certification will be awarded to students who complete the following:
- Attend the full 8-hour Flagger certification course
- Provide photo ID verifying their identity and required minimum age
- Score 80% or better on the certification exam
A digital copy of the certification will be emailed to you, and the official paper certification will be mailed to the address you provide during registration. Note that the digital copy of the certification is not valid for work as a Flagger. You must have a paper copy of your certification on your person at all times while operating as a Flagger.
The Idaho Flagger Certification is valid for 3 years.
Retests
Per state guidelines, if you do not pass the exam, you must retake the entire course.
